In 2012, I studied at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art in Pittsburgh, USA, which was the alma mater of Andy Warhol. The school offers classes to read his life and works, including his diary.
The prestigious Carnegie Mellon University is one of the most expensive private universities in the United States. Pittsburgh's memories of being an industrial city are only hidden in the bookstore's postcards. But in Andy Warhol's childhood, the town was small and ordinary, and he was thirsty for the life in the New York metropolis. As America became the most powerful country in the world in his time, Andy Warhol became one of the star artists of the country to be presented to the world. However, in his diary, he revealed that behind his bustling artist career, he was filled with his inferiority and pain. 'Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.'
Isaiah 41:10 |
In a changing world, where we are also increasingly more connected, mutually redefined and transformed, we discover how deeply we are attached and dependent on each other, on our culture, history, traditional beliefs and norms. Interpersonal borders is a notion and a tool of resistance that liberates us and allows us to flourish in the rift between the given social structure and our complexity. 'True Light in the Dark' & Bright Light of Noon are artwork that talk about this tension, yet provide hopes to many who walk in their valleys or narrow paths.

'When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark'
