Elva Lai (b.1989)
I live and work in my hometown, Hong Kong.
Art has been a hobby of mine since I was a child, and as I have become more and more specialized in art, I have sometimes forgotten my simple love of painting and the freedom of color. However, I still yearn for more different ways of expression, and contemporary art fulfills this. Since I was a child, I have loved to read and write down my thoughts, and I also like to keep a diary to reflect on my life. I am amazed by the beauty of art and the richness of expression by artists around the world, and I enjoy being a part of it. Art is a vessel for human emotions and a vehicle for justice, human values, mystery and hope. People are attracted by the wonder or beauty of art and come to realize what is behind it. I received my education internationally. I studied in Germany, USA, Hong Kong and Singapore respectively. I participated in art festivals and received awards for my art projects. I completed the Advanced Certificate of Theology at City Harvest School of Theology in Singapore in 2020. I finished my Post-master degree (Meisterschülerstudium) at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst zu Leipzig) in Germany and graduated from the Class of Installation and Space in 2017. I received my Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013 & 2015 respectively. I also studied at the School of Arts at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA in 2012.
I received Landskrona Foto and Fröfabriken Creative Space Residency in 2016 and had my solo show in the Landskrona Foto Festival in Sweden in 2017. I was also awarded the Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize in 2014 and Freeman Creative Prize in 2015. I was also a Project Grant recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2017 & 2019. My work has been exhibited in Germany, Belgium, Sweden, and Hong Kong. I also presented my projects in art conferences in Germany and England. My work is a meeting of materials full of history, poetry, stories and wonder. The actual artwork ranges from drawing, installation, video, writing, artist book, poster to flyers.
I like to explore different countries and local industrial or interior design materials to enrich my installation art. For example, during my residency programmes in different countries, I explore local interior design materials and use them in my artworks, especially in the display of exhibition venues. In terms of presentation, I focus on the combination of colours, materials and the richness of the installation work. |
